Finish #1 for the challenge!

This was a hand applique class taught by Doreen, a member of our local guild, Prairie Rose Quilters. Once the center was finished, I added borders with Cathedral Window miters. I wanted to hand quilt this piece in order to learn the process a bit better. This is the second item that I have hand quilted. I finished it with a zippered back so it can be used either as a pillow or as a wall hanging. This is my first finish for Finn's New Years Eve Challenge!

My first hand quilted project was this table runner which I made last summer (pre-blog). It is actually a "Quilt as you sew" project but, after it was sewn, I felt it needed something more. I adapted a stencil I had for the border and the triangles, then did some straight lines. It proved to be a great portable learning project during my recovery from hip surgery. My hope is to be able to do more hand quilting as I find it very soothing.

  1. OMG That wallhanging is incredible! HAND work? (oy!) And how clever are you to do the cathedral window corners. That is Stun.Ning.

  2. They are both beautiful. I love hand quilting but unfortunately time doesn't allow much.

  3. Very nice work . . . hand quilting has a different look to it than machine quilting. Like Gina said - time doesn't allow much hand quilting at my house either. Sewing down the binding seems to be enough hand sewing for me these days. That challenge is a motivator isn't it. - Marlene

  5. Nice quilts, Edna. Thanks for dropping by and leaving a comment on my PhD blog. Also thanks for your suggestion. I'm trying to figure out a way to have easy access to all those UFOs so wasn't going to leave the progress reports on the blog, but your comment has me thinking that there has to be a way. A website might work better than a blog, but I will figure it out. I like your idea... so thank you for motivating my brain!

My husband was raised in Medicine Hat and his mom still lives there.

  6. Hi Edna, I was just copied your question to bluemeadowndesigns regarding the cutting instructions for the mystery quilt we both are doing. The general cutting instructions were in an "older post" about two or three Mondays ago. I don't think there would be any problems with wasting fabric - I kinda followed along, but I used two fat 1/4's that I had for the two tone-on-tone prints that Myra used - I still didn't run out of fabric. Your are currently posting as a "no reply" when you send a message - that makes it really hard to find you when I wanted to get back to you. Another kind blogger helped me out earlier this week to fix the same thing on my blog emails. She said to: "Go to your "Dashboard", in there on your left click on "Edit Profile", once in there, the third item down has a box to check off "show my email address". Then scroll all the way down to "Save Profile", and your email should show up on your profile... 8-)" She told me it worked and now I'm easier to send a reply to. Please let me know if you have any questions and I'll try and help out. - Marlene

  8. Edna your quilt pillow is absolutely gorgous! And for this only being your second time hand quilting you are doing splendidly! I have been hand quilting for years and find it very relaxing to do at nite in front of the t.v. I am envious of your cathedral window corners " where in the world did you learn to do that! take care Linda
